A Quick Orientation of Venice
Venice's historic centre is made up of six districts: Cannaregio, Dorsoduro, Castello, Santa Croce, San Polo and San Marco. San Marco Square is the only square in the city and is home to the impressive Basilica San Marco and Doge's Palace. To the east is Castello, the oldest part of central Venice, which is rich in history. The ancient Arsenale ship-building yard can be found here.
Cannaregio is in the north and is home to Santa Lucia Railway Station. San Polo is the smallest area, with many taverns selling drinks and tasty Venetian delicacies. Santa Croce is in the northeast of the city and connects Venice to the mainland via Piazzale Roma. In the south is Dorsoduro, home to the 17th-century Dogana da Mar, the sea customs house of the Venetian Republic.
