A Quick Orientation of Sydney
Sydney's districts and neighbourhoods each have their own distinctive character. Circular Quay and The Rocks sit in the heart of Sydney and are popular tourist areas, with cobbled streets, bars, restaurants and a number of restored historic buildings. Nearby are Darling Harbour, the city's thriving Chinatown and the trendy Darlinghurst district. From here you can wander into the bustling CBD and several pedestrianised streets break up the grid nicely. The Botanical gardens and Hyde Park are town planning strokes of genius, ensuring the centre has parks close enough for businessmen to kick their shoes off during lunch hour.
To the east of the city centre is the world-famous Bondi Beach and its quieter neighbour, Coogee Beach. Other interesting areas for visitors include Manly, Glebe, Surry Hills, Newtown and Kings Cross.
Across the Harbor bridge is a second North Shore CBD and a slew of suburbs that sit around the bay, culminating in Manly, with its seaside feel. West of the city is largely working class but was chosen as the main location for the Olympic village during Sydney 2000.
