A Quick Orientation of Rome
As capital of Italy, Rome is a large and bustling city on the River Tiber. Many of Rome's most famous ancient sites such as the Coliseum and the Pantheon can be found in the historic district on the Palatino hill. Here you will find the city's most famous ancient landmarks and whole areas are clustered of excavated ruins dating back to the Roman empire. Nearby is the fashionable via Veneto and the Piazza Barberini, as well as the Piazza del Popolo and the famous Spanish Steps.
On the other side of the river is Vatican City, which is home to the Pope and the world's smallest sovereign state. Attractions here include St Peter's Basilica, St Peter's Square and the Sistine Chapel, with its huge ceiling painted by Michelangelo.
Two huge parks are found either side of the river, Villa Borghese and the Botanical gardens.
