Perth is situated on the Swan River, named after the black swans which are indigenous to the area, which is mostly flat, rolling land full of sandy soil and deep bedrock that lies adjacent to the Darling Scarp, a low escarpment running to the east of the city. Perth extends to Mundaring in the east, Joondalup in the north and Mandurah in the south.
Many of Perth's hotels are situated near the coastal areas of Cottesloe and Scarborough, and are often a popular choice among those looking to take advantage of the excellent surfing on offer in Perth. Tourists looking to visit Perth's historic landmarks and monuments will also have a dozens of hotels to pick from at Northbridge and Subiaco, which are home to some of the city's top hotels. South Perth is more of a residential area and is often preferred by families who can reach the city centre by crossing Narrows Bridge or by using the ferry that crosses Swan River.
