A Quick Orientation of New Orleans
New Orleans is known for the vibrancy of its culture and its people and this can be experienced throughout the city's districts. Bounded by Canal street, North Rampart street, Esplanade avenue and North Rampart street, the French Quarter is the most well-known of New Orleans' districts and is famous for Bourbon street, with its numerous bars that are thronged by revellers on special occasions such as Mardi Gras and New Year's Eve.
Downriver from the French Quarter are numerous neighbourhoods that are popular among artists, while the Treme district in the north is home to a black community with a pedigree in the blues. Garden district is located to the south of the French Quarter and it is here where much of New Orleans' aristocracy built splendid mansions in past times. Taking in lower Garden district and the area home to Tulane and Loyola universities, Uptown New Orleans is an area known for its trendy restaurants, music hangouts and unique shops.
