A Quick Orientation of Memphis
A great place to begin your tour of the city is the Beale street area in downtown Memphis, which is steeped in blues history and music-related venues. From Beale street you can explore the wider downtown district, with its wealth of old historic buildings that bring to mind the city's early days as an important trading port and Civil War site as well as later playing a prominent role in African-Americans' fight for civil rights. The bulk of the city's evening entertainment spots are concentrated in the downtown area.
Heading up to midtown or Central district, you'll enter Memphis' shopping and arts area, with the Cooper-Young district in particular hosting numerous upscale boutiques and galleries. Here you'll find some interesting markets in which to hunt for that special item while also listening to some great live music.
Just east of downtown, East Memphis is the city's CBD and main accommodation area. The focus here is on modern facilities, with movie theatres, shopping malls and art galleries lining the well-kept, busy streets.
