A Quick Orientation of Melbourne
The centre of Melbourne is set out on a grid system, with wide streets crossing each other and bordered by the Yarra River. With its trendy galleries, bars and restaurants, Melbourne's huge Federation Square is among the many highlights in the city centre. Nearby are the two riverside districts of Richmond and South Melbourne and farther south - about four miles from the centre - is the lively, cosmopolitan suburb of St Kilda, with its beaches, bars and other attractions. It's become a trendy place to live, with a seaside atmosphere and many of the city's yuppies come here to drink and dine on weekends and evenings, though it does also have it's bohemian side.
The Southbank district is home to the Victorian Arts Centre and the Crown Entertainment Complex, which includes one of the world's biggest casinos. Nearby Fitzroy is often known as Melbourne's bohemian quarter, with its lively nightlife and interesting shops. To the north of the central business district is Carlton, full of Victorian houses and home to the area known as Little Italy.
