A Quick Orientation of Key West
Key West is the most southerly island of the Key West group, and is the closest part of the US to Cuba. With coasts joining the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic, the warm waters here provide an abundance of sea life and crystal clear areas in which to swim. The Old Town is the focal point of the island, with the busy Duval street and Bahama Village attracting visitors to its shops and restaurants. On the eastern part of the island, New Town offers resorts, hotels and other tourist amenities.
On the northern coast you will find attractions such as the Key West Aquarium and Mallory Square, while the Mel Fisher Museum is close by inland. Centrally located on the island is the Key West Cemetery, the resting place of those individuals who lost their lives in the sinking of the USS Maine. The southern coast of the island is home to both City and Higgs beaches, two of the most popular, as well as the Fort Zachary Taylor Historic Site and the Harry S. Truman US Naval Reservation.
