A Quick Orientation of Kansas City
Most of the city's interest lies on the Missouri side of the city. First on any visitor's itinerary should be the 18th and Vine district. Home to Kansas City's famous jazz scene, the area has many outstanding soul clubs and offers great local southern cooking. Brookside runs from the University of Missouri-Kansas and is characterised by white 1920s-style buildings, tall trees and green public areas; this district has kept its popularity since the heady days of prohibition and the city's early jazz legends.
The downtown district offers panoramic views of the entire city and is home to many first-class hotels, fine dining establishments and some of Kansas City's impressive architecture. Nearby lies the River Market area; a commercial centre for all types of activities, this area was one of the original Kansas City trading sites. The Crossroads Arts district is an interesting mix of art retailers, boutiques, eating establishments and a mecca of all types of social activity. It also has a number of prominent art galleries.
