A Quick Orientation of Edinburgh
The centre of Edinburgh has two parts. To the north is the New Town, built in the 18th century and set out on a grid pattern with wide streets. Today this is the city's busy business district, while to the south is the medieval Old Town, with its narrow alleys and historic sights. The famous Royal Mile links Edinburgh Castle with the Palace of Holyrood house in the Old Town.
The two are bisected by the Edinburgh rail station with the two sides of the town looming either side on elevated ground.
The popular seaside resort of Portobello is to the east of the city centre, and northeast is the historic port of Leith. Near Leith is the harbour village of Newhaven, while the Pentland Hills rise to the south of Edinburgh.
