A Quick Orientation of Darwin
If you head west from the Darwin Transit Centre on Peel street, you will reach the Esplanade, one of Darwin's main streets. The Esplanade runs almost the length of the city along the gorgeous coastline from Bicentennial Park in the north, past scenic Lameroo Beach, before finally curving eastward near Fort Hill Wharf and the Wharf District. At the north end of the Esplanade lies Aquascene, a popular attraction where large numbers of fish congregate at high tide.
Running parallel to the Esplanade is Mitchell street, home to much of Darwin's entertainment and many of its attractions. If you continue east from here along either Peel or Knuckey street, you will reach Smith street, where you will find plentiful accommodation and shopping. Smith street is also the location of the main Darwin tourist information office. In the south of the city is Harry Chan avenue, home to the city's civic centre as well as several historic buildings, while even farther south is the Darwin Wharf District, which has survived a tumultuous past including bombings by the Japanese during WWII. This district has become one of the most vibrant parts of the city, featuring shopping, excellent dining and many attractions such as the Indo-Pacific Marine and Australian Pearling Exhibition.
