A Quick Orientation of Dallas
They say everything is bigger in Texas and Dallas certainly wears the maxim out. Incorporating the towns of Fort Worth and Arlington into one huge city, known as the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Dallas has a large metropolitan centre and numerous smaller neighbourhoods and historic districts. The West End is a good place to start exploring Dallas, since it has been designed with tourism in mind and features an excellent selection of accommodation. It is only a short distance from many of the city's most popular tourist attractions including the West End Marketplace and the infamous Dealy Plaza, the site of the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963. North of the West End is the Arts District, a specially designated 17-block area that is home to a large number of the city's art galleries and museums including the hundred-year-old Dallas Museum of Art.
Farther north lies Uptown Dallas, where some of the best restaurants and bars in the city can be found. There are an increasing number of hotels and spas being developed here alongside eateries and boutiques, blending entertainment and shopping in one area. The upmarket character of Uptown and the West End are balanced out by the vibrant and hip areas of Greenville avenue and Deep Ellum. Deep Ellum is located at the eastern edge of central Dallas. One hundred years since its beginnings as a hotbed for jazz and blues, this district has recently undergone a revival and is now the best place for live music and a trendy place to be seen among the young people of Dallas. With more than 42 nightclubs, Deep Ellum is the beating heart of Dallas nightlife. To the north of Deep Ellum, Greenville avenue is another fashionable district, home to hip restaurants, unique shops and trendy bars and nightclubs. South of Mockingbird lane, Lower Greenville has a unique, arty feel to it, while Upper Greenville is a more upmarket neighbourhood, home to many young professionals.
