A Quick Orientation of Cleveland
Cleveland is located in the state of Ohio, on the southern shores of Lake Erie. The heart of Cleveland is its downtown district, which was once littered with smokestacks and other industrial detritus. These days, downtown Cleveland is a vibrant, attractive area, filled with excellent hotels, shops and restaurants as well as a number of interesting tourist attractions.
Located at the northwestern end of the city centre, Cleveland's Historic Warehouse District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and its charm has attracted a large number of affluent young professionals and artists. As the oldest commercial centre in Cleveland, the Warehouse district is now alive with bars, clubs and restaurants. Also listed on the National Register of Historic Places is the Shaker Square district. Located a short distance from the city centre, near E 9th street, this is one of the best areas in all of the Midwest for shopping. Boutique shopping, fine restaurants and a six-screen cinema make this area popular with visitors and residents alike.
South of the city centre lies Tremont, another area that has seen vast improvements in recent years. Tremont is characterised by fine restaurants, art galleries and trendy pubs. Just across the river from downtown, Ohio City is one of the most culturally diverse sections of the city and is home to more than 15 different ethnic groups. This amazing diversity makes the area one of the best places for Cleveland ethnic food and there is a wealth of small places serving authentic cuisine from all over the world.
University Circle is located four miles east of central Cleveland. Most of Cleveland's cultural attractions are located in this area such as the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the Botanical Gardens. Near University Circle you will find Little Italy, one of the most charming areas of Cleveland. Little Italy is characterised by cobbled streets, galleries and delicious Italian food. Lorain avenue is one of the quirky, offbeat areas that have sprung up as Cleveland has drawn more and more young people to the city. The selection of restaurants here is excellent and there are plenty of pubs offering lively evening entertainment.
