A Quick Orientation of Christchurch
The heart and soul of Christchurch is Cathedral Square, the centerpiece of which is the dazzling Christchurch Cathedral. Bordered by the 'Four Avenues' of Bealy, Fitzgerald, Moorhouse and Rolleston, Cathedral Square is the hub of this important city. This is reflected by the fact that many of the districts of Christchurch are defined by their relationship to the city centre. Many of Christchurch's tourist attractions, shopping areas and dining places are found in this vibrant district.
To the north of Cathedral Square, you will find a large shopping district that encompasses Victoria Square on the banks of the Avon River and New Regent street, home to many chic cafés and restaurants. The stunning Jade Stadium is located to the east of Cathedral Square. Known by locals as Lancaster Park, this stadium is host to many major sporting events such as Rugby and Cricket as well as many other Christchurch events. Continuing farther east you will reach the Te Huingi Martu Wildlife Reserve and the gorgeous New Brighton seaside. West of Cathedral Square lies the expansive Hagely Park, featuring golf, museums and picnicking. This area is also the location of the main train station in Christchurch. South of Cathedral Square you will find several excellent sports facilities including Addington Raceway, Christchurch's horse racing circuit.
