A Quick Orientation of Canberra
The city of Canberra has a tightly packed city centre, with the surrounding areas being divided into different districts, neighbourhoods and suburbs. A common dividing point in the city's separate districts and neighbourhoods is the vast manmade Lake Burley Griffin, named after the man credited with designing Canberra. The city is a naturally attractive one and is hedged in on all sides by green hills and valleys as well as forested areas.
The city centre offers many of Australia's top historic landmarks including the War Memorial, National Gallery and New Parliament House as well as the city's top entertainment venues. North Canberra is a good place to go for those travelling on a budget and is also known as a great place for shopping and its excellent Turkish and Asian cuisine. South Canberra is close to the city centre and is a great, relaxed place to soak up the city's café culture and check out the numerous shopping arcades in the area.
