A Quick Orientation of Barcelona
With its street performers, busy restaurants, shops, hotels and bars, Las Ramblas begins opposite the port at the Plaça Portal de la Pau and travels north to Plaça de Catalunya. Las Ramblas is ideally explored on foot and is a good place to people watch and absorb the city's unique ambience. Heading north on Las Ramblas, you'll find the large neighbourhood of El Ravel to your left and the Gothic Quarter to your right.
Beyond the Gothic Quarter is La Ribera, containing the Chinese Quarter and hip neighbourhood of El Born and together along with the Gothic Quarter they make up Barcelona's Old City. Try the suburb of Gràcia for quirky bars and some decent international restaurants, a trendy atmospheric area that can be reached on the metro.
