A Quick Orientation of Athens
The city of Athens is enclosed by several mountains including those of Aigaleo, Parnes, Pentelikon and Hymettus, while the Mediterranean Sea runs down the western side of the city. A good overview of the city stretching all the way to the Piraeus can be enjoyed by taking a trip to one of the city's eight hills. Dry for most of the year, the Ilissus River runs through the city.
The Monastiraki area of Athens is one of the most visited and scenic areas of Athens. It is located next to Plaka, the city's bustling old town, which has been populated for more than 5,000 years and offers the easiest route up to the Acropolis.
Psyrri is the centre for nightlife in Athens and is only a 10-minute walk from Monastiraki and Plaka. The area is a trendy mix of bars, clubs and restaurants. People from all walks of life come here to enjoy the evening air and stroll up and down the narrow cobbled streets.
