A Quick Orientation of Amsterdam
The centre of Amsterdam is quite compact and can be easily explored on foot or by bicycle. Dam Square marks the centre of the city, while to the south are some of the city's famous museums such as the Rijksmuseum and the Vincent Van Gogh Museum. To the west is the fashionable district of Jordaan, with its trendy shops and restaurants.
To the east of Dam Square are a number of parks, the busy Rembrandts plein entertainment area plus more museums and theatres. In the north is the lively red light district and the Nieuwmarkt area as well as attractions such as the beautiful Hortus Botanicus botanical gardens.
The best way to appreciate Amsterdam is to hire a bike and follow the concentric canals that surround the city of three sides.
