A Quick Orientation of Adelaide
Built on the banks of the beautiful Torrens River, Adelaide is large city, spread out on the coastal plains between the Gulf of St Vincent and the Adelaide Hills. Adelaide is made up of many smaller districts and neighbourhoods, dotted over a large area. The heart of Adelaide is the city centre, an organized grid work of roads that encompasses the Central Business District as well as the Sky City Casino, Adelaide Parliament House and the magnificent Botanic Gardens. North Terrace in central Adelaide is home to many luxury hotels.
West of the city centre is the coastal area known as Glenelg. This popular area is easily reached from central Adelaide by the city's regular tram service and is the location of many of Adelaide's expansive beaches as well as a busy alfresco café strip and several tourist attractions. To the northwest of the city centre lies Port Adelaide; formerly a substantial shipping hub in the 19th century, it is still a working port today. The many well-preserved Victorian homes, warehouses and public houses are big draws to this area, along with offshore fishing trips and cruises along the Port Adelaide River.
Between Glenelg and Port Adelaide rests the quiet community of Henley Beach, with its large central square surrounded by wine bars. This area's beaches are some of the best in Adelaide, especially for surfing. North of the city centre, in the aptly named North Adelaide, you will find many of the city's best restaurants and bars as well as several more of Adelaide's popular outdoor cafés. At the northeast end of the city centre is the district of Norwood, known for its excellent shops, restaurants and charming stretch known as The Parade.
